homoploid hybridisation in a butterfly species

National Geographic’s got some pictures of a hybrid butterfly found in alpine regions of Sierra Nevada. The hybrid is a homoploid hybrid (i.e. a shows a blending of the genomes from the two parent species without increase in chromosome number). This confirms theories that homoploid hybridisation is made easier by extreme habitats (abstract only).
