Silent mutations do have some effect

Silent DNA mutations (i.e. mutations which don’t change the resulting protein structure ) are thought to be evolutionarily neutral. However, a recent paper by Kimchi-Sarfaty et al in Science suggests that these mutations can have non-neutral effects in certain circumstances by altering protein form.
