Treating drug-resistant Malaria

Noranate et al in PLOS One report on a 10 year survey of anti-malarial treatment procedures. They demonstrate that the cycling of two different treatments (chloroquine and sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine) unfortunately does not hamper the increase in drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. The suggest that to stop the evolution of drug-resistance, “drastic measures (must be) put in place to prevent selection and spreading of mutants during the post-treatment period.”
