England’s rock art
The Northumberland and Durham Rock Art Pilot project has released a new website cataloguing England’s Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Rock art. There’s some truly beautiful pieces shown there - this is my favorite:
The Daily Mail also has an article on this project.

This is wonderful stuff - great art, but why?
People around the world seem to have laboriously pecked out very strong designs on rocks, but what for?
That Labyrinth spiral took a long time to make. So did the other amazing carvings in the article.
(And yes, I know we Brits are only just now finding what so many other peoples have found in their own places).

Second thought - many (most) labyrinth puzzles don’t have a line leading straight through to the middle. Is this a mystery or a lesson?
Third thought - your blog design was excellent- why change it?

Richard, Rock art is fascinating. It’s all over the Pacific too. Everyone knows about the Easter Island Moai, but the smaller ones are everywhere. There’s a great collection in the museum in Noumea, which shows huge variation, and these have just been collected from the local region (Grand Terre). I’m not sure if anyone’s looked at the symbology of this stuff, but I know that most people think the New Caledonian ones are generally territory markers, so maybe that’s what the British ones are?
As for the blog design - change is good! I was finding the old one a bit bland and washed out. Alternatively, I was just procrastinating again (website-tweaking is one of my great procrastination techniques).
