The introduction of 2,000 new words into the forthcoming edition of the dictionary has meant that some of the lesser known and used words have become endangered and face being lost from the publication.

A list of 24-threatened words has been drawn up and some celebrities have taken up the challenge of rescuing a word from oblivion.

Stephen Fry has chosen the word “fusby”, which means short, stout or squat.

This is a nice one; a stunt, but fun; all Collins has to do is add just one extra page to accommodate all these ‘redundant words’

or write a bit of a spiel about the astergent Mr Mr Stephen Fry:

Having cast aside his agresticity and caducity, Mr Stephen Fry, compossibly with another periapt and fatidical fictional character, now griseous with age, and became quite uncharacteristically periapt.

Never niddering, but always nitid, Stephen recremented nothing, but issued a fatidical malison on everybody else within hearing.

PS I think the editor of Collins dictionary should be able to spell ‘mansuetude’ properly.

  2. Richard – that is, hands down, the best comment I’ve had to date on henry. I had to look up a few of those words myself!

(& yes, it was a rather excellent stunt for Collins)
